I got a collection of trench art today. This one seems very strange. First of all, it’s dated 1918. There seems to possibly be a French abbreviation one it but seems to be Chinese stamps on the bottom. It’s also on a Remington shell. Any idea of authenticity or value? Thanks guys!

The linked trench are is on an authentic but cut-down Navy 4”/50 case. So it isn’t something a smart collector would want. The case was originally bottle-necked and a good bit taller. It was cut down to make an umbrella stand, but the value was cut over 1/2. Now worth maybe $100.

The one in this post was made from a real 75mm fired case, dunno what the odd cross marks are but probably not Chinese. As for the art part of it, looks like an electric engraver was used but I’m pretty sure the art dates back a good ways too, just the engraving method isn’t to my liking. Similar PCs go for $50. Or less on Eboo, as the corset-waist 75mm is very common. If it has personal names or units marked, that adds some value. Let’s see the others!

It looks like a genuine engraving of the period. No mention of a family, but the engraving is a bit clumsy, which makes it confusing for non-Dutch speakers.
    It says:

Nederland in oorlog met Duitschland 10-5-1940
The Netherlands at war with Germany 10-5-1940 (the date that Germany invaded the Netherlands). This is old spelling, used until 1947.

Below that the Dutch coat of arms with the motto "Je Maintiendrai", which is French for "I will uphold". It has to do with the Dutch connection with the House of Chalons-Orange in France.

    At the bottom it has:
Brunssum bevryd door de geallieerden 19-9-1944
Brunssum liberated by the allies 19-9-1944.

The south of the Netherlands was liberated in 1944, Holland and the north in 1945. The two halves of the country are divided by three main rivers, a natural (and cultural) barrier which was always a huge problem during any war in the country. The Germans flooded the main region between the rivers in an effort to stop the allied invasion/liberation.
The town of Brunssum is in the southeastern panhandle.
