Does anyone know what type of pottery piece this is and how old it might be? Thank you all for your help! I really appreciate it!

Is that a maker mark, in the box next to the word Japan?

Yes Awaji indeed, some of the productions are quite pricey these days. Always liked the mustard glaze and green stuff and the stuff with the basket weaves ..

The box next to the word Japan is actually a stamp mark that is glazed over. Not sure if that’s what you mean.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Rotated, contrasted, etc....don't know if English or not......KIND of looks like FJ, BUT that does NOT mean that's what it says......there are also some markings around the raised bottom as well....not that I can see them clearly!

I understood the square mark on Awaji is a flag - Sanpei flag
The 'Japan' mark I believe means made between 1891-1921 as after that it changes to 'made in Japan'.
Those horizontal handles are also typical. As are the 3 equally spaced rough patches on the base during firing, the fourth larger one looks like some damage?
    Nice piece !
