Featured Need Help Identifying This Vintage Bracelet

Discussion in 'Jewelry' started by Bluebutterfly55, Mar 16, 2017.

  1. I inherited a bracelet that I think is probably from the 1940's-1950s, but it might be earlier because my mom had it quite awhile. I saw a few pics online that looked quite similar in style to this one. They were "Don Quixote" story bracelets, also made in Spain as this one is. But I have not found any to match the one I have.

Mine has a little boy and a little girl at play, and also a really cool dog charm dangling at the end of the bracelet. There are no other identifying marks or manufacturers, just "made in spain". Thanks so much if anyone can give me further info or worth on this. I think it is made of pewter or silver plate? bracelet1a.jpg bracelet2a.jpg bracelet3a.jpg bracelet4a.jpg

It's some sort of pot metal, i.e. costume. These were popular back in the 50s; I don't know the origin of the designs on this one. The style was almost always some sort of souvenir jewelry. Souvenir of where in this case...dunno.

Generic Spanish souvenir, from the 60s when Spain emerged from the long Hunger and the Civil War. Before then - 30s to 50s - there was neither the will nor the resource. The Made in Spain bit is a good indicator: we Brits were the first to really take advantage of the new tourism.

  6. Thank you all so much for your replies. That's so interesting! This will give me more info to perhaps find a pic that matches the bracelet I have. Since I haven't found one yet, it makes me wonder if mine is rare? I have no idea where my mom might have gotten it as a tourist bracelet. She never went outside the U.S. during her life. Maybe someone gave it to her as a gift. In the late 1950's, early 1960's she was living in S. California. That's the most likely timeframe when she would have acquired it. Thank you again for your help, if I find out more, I will be sure to post here!

Not that rare in the UK - my mother had similar things, which we bought on holiday in Spain in the early 60s. I suspect your idea that it was a gift is right.

Big U.S. military presence in Spain at the time. Perhaps she knew an enlisted man?

  10. yes, that could be, maybe my dad gave it to her when they were first dating, although he was never out of the U.S. either...hmmm, a mystery! But that's what makes vintage items so fun!

  11. I only just now started researching this particular item. So, maybe a match will turn up somewhere online. As indicated, the closest match I found was the Don Quixote "story" bracelets, made in Spain, with very similar metal and styling.

  12. That's so interesting! Here in the U.S. it might be a somewhat rarer item. I think it's something that she would not have bought for herself, so yes, I feel it probably was a gift. The scenes of children at play and the dog charm seems to imply that it's for a younger person or was designed obviously with children in mind. My mom had this the whole time I was a kid, so it goes back quite a way. Maybe she had intended it for me as a little gift, but I never personally wore it and I don't think she wore it very much, if ever. I just saw it a lot in her jewelry box and always found it unique.

Back in the 60s, Globemasters and other MAC transport planes leaving Rota and other bases had cargo holds packed with giant wooden Spanish galleons....!
