Hi everyone, I’m just wondering if you guys think this egg basket has NA roots or not. It’s definitely an antique but I’m not sure where exactly it comes from. Thank you! 933C95E6-B7D0-4052-B10E-2FF03C34BEDC.jpeg 4014EE5B-3FD7-47E8-BFEE-BC4E6BC9222D.jpeg 3AF9EF91-1801-467E-BFE2-127231E68899.jpeg 933C95E6-B7D0-4052-B10E-2FF03C34BEDC.jpeg

This is called (and I'm completely serious)-a Buttocks Basket. The older ones I've normally seen are from the Mid-Atlantic States up to New England (for example Lancaster Co & Nantucket). I'm not aware of many NA versions of it,but my knowledge compared to Komokwas is tiny.

Do you have provenance for it? It looks in very good condition for 100+ years old.

split white oak Appalachian basket......likely made in the North Carolina area.

I've actually owned one like it with the wood slats on the base....which kinda threw me at first, until it realized it's a more modern version of a classic older design.

I'd peg the date of the OP's at circa 1960...to 1970's

to be blatantly honest....this is a hard one for me to date accurately , as I've yet to encounter an expert opinion as to when these wood slat feet started showing up....but I'm sure these were not made for actual use, nor do they hale from the early 1900's .....as this Ebay seller below would have you believe.

.....just for some context....this Appalachian styled one is 11 x 11 inches, made in 1984 by Tony Stubblefield...

showing that dating these can be fraught with confusion.....and that the eBay one above....called large...at 8.5 inches...is not !!, not even close to large....:playful:

They're very attractive and some are reasonably priced. If I owned a Martha's Vineyard lighthouse,I'd have to have one in my Shaker library next to my Whaling and Wampanoag artifacts.

I have purchased and sold dozens of buttock baskets and I have never seen the feet on any of them. I think it was a later addition since people wanted them to sit upright on the table or counter. Buttocks baskets I think originated in Europe.
