    Hi

I saw a pair of these at auction and grabbed them. I guessed they might be Louis XVI 1920's but when i got them home and studied them, they appear to be better quality and suggest 19th century.

My biggest problem was what to call them. They are lamps but if 19th century then they are Candle holders, possibly once Candlebra or even Gilded bronze Cassolettes.

    Also when they were made.

The most signifigant Louis XVI revival was 1860-1880 and 1920 for most high quality reproductions, however Louis xvi repro was made through the 20th century.

Anyone got an opinion on what they are called, the black vase appears to be a metal of some kind.

Was it a good find, It cost under £100.

I have a similar pair in my livingroom and I love them.
These look Italian made to me, with handmade replacement shades.

That is fascinating and i wonder what name you identify them with because I am finding it very hard to find anything similar, that is with the same scrolls and the same black metal vase, and the same cherubs climbing the amphora. Although I found some art deco with the climbing cherubs on basic bronze vase's. So mine could be early 20th century, possibly 1920's as that would be the peak in Louis xvi reproductions.

I am guessing yours are more likely like an urn or vase with ormulu gilt bronze and no cherub. I cannot find any identical to these. If an urn they would be cassolettes.

I am growing very fond of these too, and cannot wait to place them on my Kingswood ormulu decorated XVI table when i get it from storage, and maybe place a painted sevres porcelain plate in between.

I think yours are older than mine and yours could be 1920s in era.
Mine are not nearly exact to yours, totally different, same flavor.

I think yours could be older than 1920s too. Perhaps turn of the century..?

If you ever have time, could you post a picture of yours :) No pressure. I usually class Louis XVI into two catgories.
    Origional Louis XVI 1754-1793
Reproductions: 1860-1880 and 1920 and a smaller minority in and around 1930
1950's and then later 20th century, into the 21st century.

You can trace the many revivals throughout 19th and 20th century. Elizabethan, greco, etc and Louis XVI was late 19th century and also 1920's.
