I got this nice old hardwood box, it has a name etched into MOP on the top but I'm struggling to make it out.

    J.H or J.K. ?????CH
    Leeds

    Any ideas.

Too many letters. J K French? The last word looks like "seeds". Seed packets probably, although this looks like a card box.

The internet has a J.K. Finch as professor of Engineering at the Department of Mining, University of Leeds in 1919.

You don't give the size. Could it be a cigarette box?

Yes , cigarettes or cigarillos, 7" long x 3" wide and 2" deep.
However it does have a working lock, which is unusual for cig boxes.

Is the box British? The wood looks as if it might be tropical.

Looks like J. K. Finch to me, although the "F" is puzzling because of the bold vertical drop before the next letter.

Made in Britain but a tropical wood, I'll find out in a few days when I visit my wood expert.

I am outnumbered. I don't know what type of box this is but I would have guessed
    T. H. or G. H. French.
