Purchased a carved wood vase at an estate auction and would like to identify the mythical creatures carved on the side. That should give me a handle on where it came from. There's a large wood split on one side that has been restored so someone thought it was worth the effort. Can anyone help me??

They look like they might be Hindu gods or goddesses.

It's a possibility. Saw the one with the elephant head but the one with the "golf sticks" and the other with the horns has me beat.

Are you sure it is wood? Or maybe the vase body is wood and imagery is applied with another material? Reason is that theoretically you could make a vase like this by carving away enough wood to leave those low-relief designs but what a needless waste of time! That design makes perfect sense if the whole thing was cast from something but to me anyway, not if it is carved from wood. How 'bout some photos of inside of top and of the bottom?

Horns on a humanoid figure = devil, Satan

Pretty sure it's wood. I'll get some top/inside photos tomorrow.

Looking at again, the vase body does appear to have grain, but the designs don't. Designs appear to be a lighter brown than the wood. Vase looks like lathe-turned wood but designs appear to have been applied as a liquid with a cake decorator or squeezed out of a tube or something similar.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

In that first image, there appears to be a chip out of the leg of the figure.....I'd put a strong loop on it and see if that gives any clue to the material....it certainly doesn't appear to have any grain to it....like the vase does......

In 3rd image you can see some leftover lathe turning rings on the bare wood surface, which disappear at the figure which was applied over the wood.

They look like some stuff I saw on a wild tv show recently, claiming to show ancient artistic or sculptural representations of aliens (not Mexicans - another kind), the theory being that space aliens caused or altered the first civilizations...

Everyone knows the aliens heavily influenced the Mayans, Incans and Egyptians. Particularly with design and also actual construction of the pyramids.

But I don't think the above creatures resemble any other worldly creatures.

    Agree, Gila?

I vote for the chupacabra. The one dude looks Egyptian, but the elephant man could be Ganesha, if it's not John Merrick.
