Featured Mysterious Box Hand Painted Need Help

Honestly have no idea as to the origin of this box, knowing very little about the regions that create this type of art. Maybe a knockoff? No makers marks as best I can tell. Pleasant fragrance from the wood and shows some signs of age on the hinges and lid. Picked it up at a thrift store so nobody to ask about it. Thanks for your time!

 

Not a "knock off". I think it is exactly what it is meant to be. This kind of thing has been done through the ages, new versions still being made.

Probably some age, not brand new. Just a guesstimate, maybe 1970s plus or minus a few decades? This is a guess based on a few things, possibly others will have thoughts. I think it has a very nice look.

"Mughal wooden box" for possible keyword in addition to words in the link INH found. And likely a marriage theme, as suggested in the link.

 

Nice box, Roger. It was made in Kashmir, northwestern India.
The style is related to Mughal art, as Lucille mentioned, but this is typical of Kashmir. The scenes are often romantic scenes or royal court scenes. There is no specific link to marriages, these are mostly made as souvenirs.

 

Hi Roger, I got caught by one of these a few years back before they became numerous on the market. They are made to look old, now being made in their 1000,s and to deceive in my opinion. I bought mine with bad photos off ebay, I thought it was old because all the metalwork was hand forged. One of only 2 mistakes I've made but it taught me a lesson, it now has pride of place next to my computer as a reminder to do my research before I bid on something.
