A little while ago I changed my avatar to this cute young lady. I purchased locally a photo album of hers full of photos from the 20s and 30s. I love the peek into her life! I thought I’d share some of the photos with you all. She seems like she would have been a fun friend!

Bluumz, those photos are wonderful. I, for one, am so happy that you "saved" them! They remind me of the hundreds I have (and have scanned) from my mother's side of the family - and you're right, Bertha looks like a real charmer!

'Perky' personified. These are great. She could have been the model for the flapper cameos we were looking at recently on the Show & Tell thread. :)

Thanks, made me happy to see these!

I have never seen women's "tennis trousers" before either! lol Anyone know if those are just ordinary woman's pants for the era, and not horseback riding gear? :cat:

I'm glad you're all enjoying them as much as me.

They definitely look like horse riding jodhpurs/breeches. Perhaps she just used them as "sports pants"? She's wearing them in a 1933 photo on a tennis court, and again in a 1935 photo standing in front of a rack of canoes.

And isn't her mother a hoot!

OMG, where to begin? These are fabulous!!!:joyful:

Thank you so much for sharing. Great that you grabbed one as an avatar (good choice!)

I love the page where Bertha put a bunch of selfies at angles, adore the mother pic, and those men's bathing suits are a riot.

Bluumz, every time you post with your new avatar it is going to bring a smile to my face thinking about Bertha.

They are both wearing essentially the same outfit: jodhpur-type pants; wide belt; short sleeved white blouse. So, could have been the tennis outfit of the day. Maybe riding breeches were adopted early on since women were probably riding before entering some other energetic outdoor sports that required a different wardrobe than croquet & badminton did.

The first batch look like photo booth snaps.

    Love it!
Especially the fact that they are dated. Gives a good idea of clothing style and jewelry.

Can you look closer with a magnifying glass at the beads? Do they look like cut crystal. That would give us a better idea of age. We've discussed cut crystals in several threads.

When I get a chance to dig the album out (it's been put away... somewhere), I'll do that. :)

Re: Jodhpurs -- one thing is for certain . . . whenever (for whatever reason) a female (young or old) wears jodhpurs she's guaranteed to have on-lookers "thinking" her ankles are sooooo small and dainty. ;)

OK - Just looked up said garment! Within the above time frame, jodhpurs were worn for almost any active sport: riding, tennis, aviation, even dancing. They entered society via India where the men wore them for polo, and hung around through Otto Preminger (as a symbol of Authority!).

:) Sometimes I jusyt love Google!

    Thanks for looking it up!
The photos I posted above are only a small portion of what's in the album. I've just had another look through it and found photos of men in jodhpurs, too.
