No, no markings under the drawers. Weird right? Here's the side of a drawer, these are the only pics I have with me, will take more at home :) 15178210_10153908376821372_7864400356941675409_n.jpg

While I'm not the furniture Guru...that drawer ether looks like a repair ...or a lesser quality copy of an earlier style ......OH BRAD !!!!!! :singing::singing::singing:

Brad - thy reputation precedes thee!

Well, in all honesty, mine does too, but not for the same things...............

I'm guessing it's a tetch over 100 years old. Beyond that I know naught.
    Looks useful however.

Why am I not seeing any hallmarks of British manufacture......I'm wondering if this isn't from somewhere else....?

Late Victorian circa 1900. I do think English. Any time you see that stippled background in a relief carving, English is a good bet. It was done on the continent some but your rarely see it in American furniture. That drawer side looks like it has been replaced. Can't really tell what the wood is. Maybe beech with a dark stain. Could actually be a darker wood such as walnut or mahogany but would need to see a better shot to tell.

Thank you. Maybe a couple more pics of the drawers would help :)

These drawers look original. If you go back to the first picture, you can see how the drawer side is lighter wood and the dovetails are cut square and puttied rather than angled as they should be. Also, should not have any nails in them as seen there.

A shot of the dresser head on and/or of the complete top with good lighting might help me to determine wood.

Looks like it could be walnut.

If not English, from where? I really don't think American.

    Laura,

What do you know about the origin of this piece and where did your mother live when she got it?

My mom lived in Canada but my uncle told me the piece might have been passed down from Dad's side of the family. Dad's parents apparently had spent some parts of their lives working overseas. Granddad worked for Alcan as an engineer and was sent to their worldwide sites regularly.

    That's all I know :)

Could be Canadian then. I don't know that much about Canadian furniture. I imagine that there would be more British influence there than here. That might explain the carving style.

Makes sense. The curved front looks French.
