    I found what I thought was a ebony 19th c inkwell stand but just after winning the auction I find out its made from gutta percha which is a rigid natural latex of the genus Palaquium. I suppose antiques is a subject you keep learning from even when you think you know that field :( Anyway I come to quite like my new purchase, still 19th c, and I didn't pay that much.     Not a mistake, but a felicitous error in identification! It's a handsome piece, and if in good condition, I can see it selling quite well.

    Thank you, it does have 2 small nibbles though so I'm not sure how that affects the price.

    Gutta Percha in that kind of shape is a lot harder to find than ebony. I'm not sure if it's worth more, but it's a lot cooler.
