I purchased this a while ago, purely out of curiosity. I've since drawn a blank trying to figure out what it is. It's 7.5cm diameter and 5cm deep. Please can you put me out of my misery. Suggestions so far have been a door stop, an anvil, a paper weight, something for needle work or an end stop for a flying shuttle. Also it feels too heavy to be just brass. As if it has been filled with something heavier. 20230312_094605.jpg 20230312_094608.jpg 20230312_094613.jpg

Yes. That was one of my thoughts. It has been struck by something many times. I have searched but can't find one like it. Maybe it is bespoke.

That makes it 3" diameter and less than 2 inches tall - who is gonna use this for a gavel? Why the hole in the middle? So you can make a whistleing noise when your smacking an auction closed - LOL!

I was think maybe the hole in the middle was used during the turning process on a lathe and has now been sealed up due to it being redundant. Or maybe it was used to fill it with a heavier substance. It is very heavy. It also has a milled edge on it which maybe serves a purpose. Extra friction for turning it like a control. Or possibly just for decoration.

Well you could put a layer or two round the edge but wouldn't really stack neatly as the endentation is conical and not cylindrical. It looks like it has been hit with something many a time though so the anvil for gavel is probably more likely.

    Poker stand.

However the crosshatch markings suggest it might have been for turning.

I like this. Quite possibly. It would explain the weat on it. The milling could just be for decorative purposes.
