    Hello,

So back in 2022 just after I bought a house I saw a small painting, not much bigger than a sheet of letter paper, in an antiques gallery in New Jersey. It was a night time nautical scene, of two tall ships in the moonlight, more towards the impressionist side. The predominate color was black and the bright light of the moon shot through the black. I was so taken with it but had literally spent every penny on my down payment and couldn't justify spending the nearly $4k for that painting, even though it blew me away. I remembered googling the artist and it was a known artist but not super famous and the prices for their other works that were online were comparable, or a little less than what I saw that painting for. Was definitely antique, had to have been before 1940 or I would have remembered it differently. I remember I went back to look at it again to see if I really loved it -- and I did -- but I couldn't justify buying it. Of course it is gone and the gallery has no idea what it might have been. Does anyone here have any thoughts? I am shocked at how frequently I think about and regret not buying that painting.

    Thanks.

It'll be hard to identify an artist based only on your memory of a work...

...but it's easy to identify the feeling you're describing here: most of us have experienced it. Remember it the next time you see a piece that really grabs your attention.
