Miro (?) Litho -- thoughts?

At the thrift yesterday. I put it in my cart, was going to drive the cart around looking for other treasures and think about it for a bit when I ran into a friend who knows a bit about art. He had a loupe and noted that this was not a print, but a litho and thought chances were that it was a Miro lithograph.

I had some hesitations because the mat is covering part of the litho which seemed a bit sloppy, but price was cheap, so my friend said to "go for it", but before I tear this whole thing open (and destroy my ability to return it if I decide to), what can you tell me? First off does anyone recognize this image?

Outer frame measures 22.5 x 20 and the mat opening is 9x12.

If there are some immediate red flags that this isn't worth a $14 gamble, let me know. Otherwise I'll tear open the back.

    Thanks! miro1.jpg

You will have to carefully take it out of the frame to see if its signed or any other info. I don't see a signature on it but matting might be covering it up

The red flag I have is that it's cheaply framed

I wondered a bit about that too, esp the string, but wondered if someone replaced that. Hmmm.

I looked up the corri-cor backing, they make a high quality acid free backing. The mat seems archival the edges are still white. Seems like the framing materials are something you would use on a artwork you wanted to take care of.

it's poorly framed , way to close to the image edge...
    i think it's just a print...

No question, strangely framed, mat is over the image edge, but the person at the thrift who I bumped into (an east coast transplant who has been buying and selling art for 50 years) looked at it with a high powered loupe w/ light and declared it was positively a litho.

I just took my own loupe out, definitely a lithograph.

I think tomorrow I am going to open the back. It seems like there are some Miro (if this is Miro) lithographs selling not all that high on Ebay, so it may not even be all that valuable, but at least I'll know what is what.

    Thanks!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Have you opened it yet? It would look much better if framed differently, I think.

Well, I've opened it but not sure I have additional info. Here it is unframed:

I believe it to be a litho, no dots with magnification. There is even a spot where the color has ever so slightly bled through the back.

First off, I don't even know if I have it right-side-up, lol. No signature or anything which is too bad. Still not 100% sure this is a Miro although it certainly is in that style. Could not find this with Google image search. It is not much bigger than what we saw with the mat, approx 9 1/4" x 12".

I don't have super high hopes for this. I did put it on Ebay in an auction on my 2nd account, opening bid $35 -- I honestly don't want to mess with it for less, so we'll see what happens!

I had the same concern, but it seems like the lithos were done in a variety of sizes. I took a quick look at Ebay ones that sold (you can filter the search to the small format, 12" or less) and many are exactly this size or close. Here is a signed one that sold for $350 that was 9" x 12".

Not suggesting my unsigned one (if it is a Miro) has that value, but apparently they did make lithos in the 9 x 12" size.

This hand signed one w/COA that sold was 6" x 6".
