Just purchased this pair of what appears to be gothic hall chairs at a local flea market. I’m told the that chairs came out of a local mansion. This doesn’t surprise me because of there size which is approximately 4 3/4’ height and weight. They both look well done and much larger than represented in the photos. Any thoughts on age and origin

I'd say 19th century English, but let's wait for the furniture people.

@James Conrad , this face is Northwind imo.:)

Agrees, late victorian 19th century, not a clue where made, doesn't look american. Not period medieval which is generally speaking 11th - 15th century for furniture. Very little furniture from the middle ages has survived in europe.

The chairs vary slightly but definitely made by the same person which is nice. How does one identify authentic midieval furniture. What are the most identifying features you would look for? I can’t take additional photos at this point because I need to go back and get them with my pick-up truck!

Where are you & where are chairs located?
Well, if you are in Europe, I would guess museums to see period medieval furniture. Generally speaking, furniture is made from wood which is perishable so it's survival rate is low from the late middle ages.

I and the chairs are located near Philadelphia, PA. I’m told that they were in a so called mansion and placed on both sides of a large fireplace. They’re extremely large and heavy and may not fit in my non-mansion

So buying a mansion is next on the list?

Yeah, one needs to be mindful about size if you plan of using this furniture in your home, a tape measure is quite useful this way. Measure the space you plan to use, then measure the piece in question and BAM! gives you a go-no go in this spot perspective.

Yes, that is ALWAYS another option! :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

The chairs I got at a great deal. A mansion to put the chairs in...not so great of deal!

    Definitely revival pieces ca. 1890-1910.

Agree with the others here and Ghopper's dates are spot-on.

    Hi,
Love your chairs. I would find room for them in my little house. The cats would probably claim them as theirs.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Probably totally out of character, but I’d LOVE to see the in a bit lighter rich wood color......just too dark for me......just my personal preference!!:rolleyes: Otherwise, they’re really neat!!!!!

A useful search term may be 'Scottish Baronial', covers a lot of pieces made in the late 19th C. when Queen Victoria made the highlands fashionable and people wanted appropriate looking furniture for their craggy 'ancestral' piles.
The new money from industry and trade also bought up paintings of 'ancestors', and a large amount of often well made reproduction armour and weapons.

I hope I’m not breaking protocol...I thought I got a pretty good deal on the chairs despite my wife’s opinion. Any thoughts to retail or auction value?

How much did you pay for the pair? $250? I'd say that's a fair price in retail, wait for others to post that are more familiar with current prices on victorian. Generally speaking, it ain't a pretty picture price wise with old furniture these days and size matters, the bigger the less desirable.

Yeah, $100 each would be fair. Less would be better, of course. Just be glad that it's not the 90s; you're wife would have REALLY been squawking then.
