    Here's a piece picked for $12.I'm guessing it's a Mexican Diablo mask from Guerrero.11" high,11 1/4" wide,5 1/2" deep.

It could actually be from Guatemala. Those distinctive upper and lower eyelashes are commonly a feature of masks from there.

I've always wanted to go somewhere where Dia Del Muerto's done right-authentic costumes, the whole nine yards.

Here is a nice piece I found - carved 33x10 inches, circa 1950s-60s. it has eye cut outs like a mask, but it's really no mask at this size. The symbolism has links with pre-Columbian religions. Elements of these symbols have become part of Mexican Catholicism. The top figure is chupacabra, the mythical vampire bat/goatsucker. The devil central figure has a bat on the lower part of his face. Bat demons and bat Gods feature in many ancient Mexican religions. The Cristiano (Spaniard) with the two snakes has a special meaning as well. Serpents are an important part of Mexican culture. This really scares the kids on Halloween which is why I always out it out with proper lighting. 138287566_1591423327710936_5155772441898958793_n (2).jpg

That's a beautiful piece Drew-well carved. Some of the modeling reminds me of the Colonial era workmanship.
