Hello everyone - I'm not quite sure what to make of this - sculpture is a little out of my range. It stands about 9 1/4" high. I think it's some type of generic pot metal but I'm not sure of what terms to use. Is there a way to tell when it might have been produced? Does this represent anyone in particular? Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

It looks like pot metal and it might be an old clock topper, but I'm not sure.

Hi, A lot these things ended up being placed on to top of clocks. The ones that were for clocks usually had a strap across the bottom on the inside with a hole to attach the piece to the clock. The ones with just the opening on the bottom were made just to sit on mantles and stuff. They were the "cheap" statuary of the times. I am guilty of placing these on clocks. Yours reminds me of Roland. I love all of them. My aunt had one of Chris Columbus that was 3 ft high. he sat next to the fireplace. I always wanted it but ........

dgbjwc, sure looks like writing on the inside bottom edge of this figurine. I have tried editing the pic in hopes of better seeing it with no luck. It is tilted up at too much of an angle for my old eyes to see it clearly. I do think??? I can make out 2 numbers in the middle of the printing. They might be 93 or 98??? Am including a pic marking what I think are the numbers and the beginning to end of the printing. There might be a "C" or "O" on our far left. That might be the copyright symbol ©???

Don, can you show a closeup of the thing he has in his hands. I can't see it clearly. I did a search for "metal clock toppers" and found this one. I'm wondering if the gun broke off and someone substituted a piece of paper.

There is a similar guy sitting down with a paper, but his hands are in different places.

Then there is a guy with a gun whose pose looks more like yours.

Finally, there is another guy with a paper, but the base is different.

    These were very popular. imagesWYOVSJ57.jpg thumb_260711000661.jpg 331586313702_1.jpg

Thanks for bringing that up, Bev. I was thinking the "paper" looked very odd, but knowing nothing about this stuff, chalked it up to lack of familiarity.

Wow! Great research, you folks are the best! I've added the requested photos below. He could certainly have been holding a gun. Somehow the paper he's holding looks like it was original to the piece - maybe it's the weld. I wonder if he was done in variations. It just seems strange that if the gun broke off the owner would choose to replace it with the same type of decoration as another clock topper variation. It never occurred to me he might be a clock topper - he seemed a bit large but obviously he isn't. I also checked for writing inside the base but I can't see it. I think it was a combination of the texture of the piece and my inadequate photography skills.

Great find, Bev! Instead of sitting on top of a clock, it may have set to the side of a clock. Something like the following. The stump or boulder he is sitting on looks to have at least some of the same flowers as around your stump/boulder.

Here is the auction catalog description of it. The clock went for $375.

"AN AMERICAN STATUE CLOCK, New Haven Clock Co., c.1900; with bronzed metal clock case and seated hunter figure together surmounting a rectangular platform base with black enamel finished and bronzed metal claw feet; the ivorized porcelain dial with visible escapement, roman numeral chapter ring and gold frame behind a round beveled glass bezel; 22-1/2"W x 15"T."

That's nice, but it's a different guy. Do a google search for "metal clock toppers" and then click on "Images" at the top left of the page.

    >That's nice, but it's a different guy<

Yes, I knew he was different, but some of the flowers around rocks look identical like it might have had the same maker.

We are off to Florida today. It may be several weeks before you have to worry with or swear over my presence.
