I cannot find another piece similar to this. It has "Ferris" embossed on the back or it could be "Perris" with the P not fully formed. Either way I draw a blank with either name associated with metalwork. There are also symbols on the shield that I am drawing a blank on. I will appreciate any help or info.

    Welcome!
There is a Ferris High School in Jersey City, NJ but I can't attach this to it. Maybe another such place.

Can you post one more photo showing the entire item, whatever it is, and dimensions? We can help more if we have the big picture and can maybe figure out why the object was made. Ferris may have been the customer who ordered this item from the foundry.

I'm thinking that too because the name is added. The foundry's would've been in the casting already.

The cross-on-shield is a common Masonic symbol, so this may have had something to do with freemasonry, although the lifelike eagle is far different from the two-headed birdie normally depicted in Masonic regalia.

I apologize for the size of the photos and for taking them on glass. This is my first post so I will preview from here on out. The photos are of the piece in its entirety. It measures 10" wing tip to wing tip and about 11.25" from wing tip to tip of shield diagonally. I did match some of the symbols with the Masons, others I could not and may I did not recognize.
