Seller told me this was Russian Lomonosov but at £4.50 I took a gamble that it wasn’t with those crossed swords.
Online these are identified as Meissen but what is the name between the blue crossed swords and the impressed crossed swords? Gjeilo? Gieilo? Gjeils?
    10.5cm tall.
Also any input on age please? I’ve seen guesses at 1930s and 1970s!
Thanks for looking at my depressed donkey :)

Thankyou so much SIS! That’s brilliant.
1912, how ever has he kept his ears for that long?!
Does it say Weifs? Still not sure :hilarious:
Excuse my ignorance but what do you know what Royal and States and VEB States mean?
    Edit-
There is a Weifs but he is 1960/70s.
May be Weiss as some sources say but why two different S’s?
Somewhere else said the blue mark didn’t come in until the 40s so Off to research more!

Just so you know, my book is copyrighted 1981 so dating stating to "present" isn't exactly present to us.:)

Weiss = white. So, I think it means white ware, or blanc de chine as in the last comment in KSW's link. Double ss was often printed as "fs" in English in the 19th c and previously and still is in German AFAIK.

That makes sense that it’s the colour not the designer, I didn’t think about that!
Interesting about the double S, you live and learn. Thankyou :)

KSW-Collectors Weekly says that Meissen Vase was found at a Goodwill ! Is my Goodwill in a parallel universe run by antique sadists ?

    That is so sweet, K.
It is a specific s, which is called 'scharfes s', or sharp s, as opposed to the regular German s. It is a legacy of the old Fraktur and Sütterlin scripts. Alternative modern spelling is ss.

I should have asked my daughter as she is studying German!
I see that’s two letters put together, but what is the letter on the left? r or l?
Sorry it’s like primary school education here
I clicked on the link but my Dutch is worse than my German!

    That is another s.
The combination of the two s's makes the s sound more precise, they call it sharp. It was/is used in certain grammatical situations, for instance an s after a diphthong, so two vowels that create a gliding sound (can't explain it any better:sorry:), like 'weiß'.

An example of a diphthong in English is the word loud, your mouth changes shape when it goes from the first vowel to the second. That effect is a diphthong.

I remember each & every piece I got at Goodwill in the 'old days'. It's always a fun discussion.

Like the difference in pronouncing "wise" and "weiss." Double ss often gives a hiss sound.
