The box says no more than what you see on the end label.
I suspect it held a brush and hand-mirror.

I am wondering if there was a specific name for these things that stood upright and opened forwards.

I don't think it can be called a trinket or jewelry box because of the specific
    fitting under the interior lining.

Is it simply brown and silver paint over a stamped tin plate? It feels like a thin sheet of metal. 20170427_071503.jpg 20170427_070442.jpg 20170427_070839.jpg 20170427_071403.jpg 20170427_073007.jpg
    How old ?

It came well-protected in its box.

It says toilet case, but you could call it a vanity case.

I thought it odd it stood upright and opened forward, unlike most I saw.
Here's another pic that shows the thin metal around the side, nailed to the wood under the surface finishes. I think (hope) you can see how the metal (tin?) was prepared to take paint with very tiny grooves along the surface. 20170427_082601.jpg

I have seen drop front vanity cases before, but they would hold small compartments, sometimes fold out compartments. This one doesn't look like it ever had those.

I now think it held 3 pieces, leaning less to a brush and mirror set.
I took a couple of photos with the drop-front opened.

I would guess 1960s. I don't think the metal is tin, it's held up very well.

Does anyone know if this could be thin silverplated copper?

Check it with a magnet.... looks like tin plated steel.

I can't feel any magnetic attraction. Still like to date it. Decided it held a comb and brush in the drop down front & a mirror held by that clip at the back.
Here's a differently shaped example, also a drop front by the looks, albeit one that seems it would have been precariously balanced (and is much fancier) with more compartments and two clasps. drop front grooming box.jpg
