komokwa The Truth is out there...!

I used to keep detailed records & then one day....I got busy....:oops:

I can't remember exactly what I paid for it , but it's so outside my wheel house....it couldn't have been that much.
You've maybe seen it before ....but now I'd like to get a handle on what, when & how touristy it may be.

You know the things with the wax stamps from China,,,,, how about Nepal ?

    It's carved and painted wood , at about 22 x 9 x 9 1/2 inches.

That's no lion I ever saw. Lions don't have horns.

It is beautiful, Komo. Very good quality.
It is unlikely it ever saw a ritual dance though. It has been artificially aged. I don't know when they started doing that in Nepal, in Indonesia they started to artificially age wayang puppets in the 50s.

It is Yamantaka, as Aaron said. He doesn't just have horns and flaring nostrils, which could make him a buffalo, deer or something similar, but he also has a beard and those flames on either side of his face. The flames are connected to the fire of hell.
Yamantaka is an extremely powerful deity, the wrathful aspect of the Bodhisattva Manjusri. The face is a buffalo face, a very strong animal. He guides a Buddhist to wisdom and helps reach enlightenment and conquer the cycle of Samasara (death-rebirth), thereby conquering death.
Another name of Yamantaka is Yama Dharmaraja, king of dharma, the Buddhist teachings.

The seal just means it was allowed to leave the country because it is not considered important to Nepal's cultural heritage.
I did tick '2 Sherpas in a shed' option though, it made me smile, so worthy of a vote.:D:hilarious:

I wouldn't buy it. Too new, too gaudy. Looks like a lot of spray paint. But no doubt there is a profit in it ... it is an impressive beast. Being a party pooper, but. Sorry.

Hi Komo. I kind of like it. It has its own individual charm and seems to have some wear around the eyes so not a very recent piece I think. I wouldn't hang it, but would attach it to a black metal stand with a rod so it can be displayed on a desk or cupboard etc. To me that would enhance its authenticity. If you are going to on-sell, I'd leave it as is. Good luck.

I'd pay anything for that, such an incredible piece. As a matter of fact I have one myself just as big, although it's a snow lion but they are very similar.

I'm serious, id give you whatever or how much you payed for it. its such a beautiful carving, I absolutely love Tibetan art and these masks are my favourite. I'm gonna have to grind at my part time job for a bit, but if you do wanna sell it to me I would be absolutely thrilled!
