    All,

I have a spoon that has some markings on it. I cannot find any information regarding these markings and if they signify the date of the spoon. The spoon looks to be made of brass. Any help would be very appreciated.

I'm just peeking in here. the one thing I can tell you is that you're more likely to get a satisfactory answer if you show us the whole spoon, front & back, selecting full size instead of thumbnails for the pix. Any chance it is Russian?

Greetings, Brian! Interesting question. A few of the letters appear to be ones used in the Cyrillic alphabet. Could be Russian?

The story my grandmother says is it belonged to William Bradford. I kind of disagree but thought I would first start by trying to get maker marks identified and then dated if possible.

Makers' marks are easier to research if you know the country they came from.

Unfortunately we have no idea where it came from. It has been in the family for a long time.

The thing is the first letter of that word or name is not a T (if the alphabet is cyrillic.)

We have people here who collect spoons. If you show us the whole thing, maybe we will be able to make an educated guess about where it came from. If you were asking about sterling silver, there would be some chance of getting an answer based on the marks alone. Chances anyone here can do that for a brass item are very slim.

Perhaps it will help to tag a couple of our native speakers of Russian who might also be able to say whether the spoon itself looks Russian.

Until I enlarged it, thought maybe it said EAGLE. Does look like TAGLE, & there have been people with that name, but they're turning up in Mexico & the Philippines.

Got very excited for a minute, Google leading me to an entry in an 1891 commercial directory for a Tagle Brass Foundry in Seattle, WA. OCR misreading for Eagle Brass Foundry.

Won't hurt to follow baker's suggestion of getting these other eyes on it, but I think now it is probably not of Russian manufacture, unless your family history supports that idea? It is the other mark that could be Cyrillic:

Is this family lore? Did grandmother inherit it & this story came with it? Or was it a gift/purchase & she was told this? Sorry to have to keep bothering Gramma with questions.

Also, has she collected silver other than coins? Is there any doubt that the spoon is not silver? I've learned I can't rely on photos for the color of metals, that silver often has a gold cast, depending on lighting.

It does not look like silver to me. It looks like brass. Gramma only collects coins. It does have some weight to it. She said the spoon has been past down the family for generations and the story has followed through some generations. No documentation of course. I was just trying to put a date to the spoon so I can try to connect the dots so to speak.

    That's what we're doing too. :)

Just learned a new word: latten. I'm going to scroll through this; you may also want to see if you can spot anything relevant:
