Does anyone know of any European crockery - porcelain, bone China, faience or otherwise - which is named “Melaka”, “Malakka”, “Malacca”, or something like that?

Ken, are you branching out to Southeast Asian inspired European porcelain?

I study worldwide stuff as it is all connected in some way or other. 6 degrees of separation and all that :) Tastes, styles, perception, self-attribution, I find them all fascinating.

It all gets traded around. A North African design motif was taken into the American Southwest by Spanish traders/settlers/conquistadors, and the Naja was adopted and adapted into jewelry by local Natives. They adopted other Spanish designs too, one of which I shipped to Singapore years ago myself. (eBay sale) I wouldn't be surprised to see things from Singapore get traded West and their designs integrated into North African jewelry.

Precisely. The way the Willow pattern evolved is a good case in point

Or the Persian Boteh design, of ancient Zoroastrian religious origin. It was introduced in Mughal India and exported on textiles from India to Europe where it was called Kashmir design. The English-speaking world thought it a Scottish invention and called it Paisley design.

The repeating and adopting of art and design around the world is so fascinating.
