I first thought it might be an incense burner, but bottom is only the green felt paper and would be sure to burn. It is a log, dog, shotgun and a pheasant. The hole in the back is for what? Thanks for any suggestions!

    My W.A.G.:

Wood matches go in the hole. They stick out so you can take them as needed. If the whiter area around the hole is as it looks in the photo, it may have resulted from contact with human hands while removing matches.

so a match safe of sorts? The whitish area around hole is just poor lighting on my part. Interesting guess Spring! Thank you!

But I don't see any place showing scratch marks where matches would have been struck either............:rolleyes: JMHO.......

Ok the rest of the match thing just hit me. I couldn’t at first tell why the “target” like thing was there, yeah, kinda like wood tree rings but too exaggerated. That’s the striker!

Possibly Hasn’t been used, they bought it for the mantle. But if you look at the top of the target rings, they look a bit deformed, like someone mighta struck matches using their left hand, with a downward motion.

I'm thinking it is part of something else.
Bookend, lamp. Something attached at the back, not underneath or the felt wouldn't be there.

it may simply be ornamental. Or, perhaps for spills rather than matches.
