Really nice quality leather box, with a bit of age. Base is moire silk, too. Just on the off chance, does that insert or the box look familiar? Ta!

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Either a REALLY BIG piece of jewellery, or a very nice jewellery box to fill up!!!!

Given color, I think that might be a gentleman's box.

Could be - there's no sign of it having had inserts for compartments, or whatever.

That it is, thank you. It came from the same seller who had NOS Christian Dior costume jewellery. They used to have some kind of link with Selfridge's, apparently. So I think it's quality.

i detect minor scuffing on the inner raised edges......i'd say missing an insert of some type.....

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Given that it has a key, perhaps it held something valuable?

I sold a lot of very similar Italian/Florentine leather boxes (with same keys and tassels) at retail in the '80s - the engraved metal inset is unusual though...

    Thanks Cheryl!

There's no sign of it having held anything. Florentine leather makes sense.

I think Cheryl nailed it. It looks like a lot of the treasure / trinket / jewelry / etc. Bombay boxes I have been selling for the past couple of months. Most of mine are wood, but I did have one leather that sold very quickly.

Most of mine are from the early 90's but they had the velvet like material inside.
