Locking cabinet

Recently purchased this cabinet at a sale for $130 dollars. Bought it because I loved the craftsmanship.

Can anyone tell me what this might have been used for? everything looks hand made. pull rings are split rings. There is a chain and ring at the top that looks like it was set up for a padlock.

I am curious on age and use.

This was purchased in the US. Midwest. Previous owner stated they had owned it for 12 years and it was purchased at some sort of auction by their kids. There are no markings. That is all I know.

 

Design is mainly Spanish Colonial. I'd suspect a Mexican import. You can find pieces along the same lines here.
