    Good morning everyone,

Today we have a game called name that pattern! Please read the rules before responding. :) :) :) I'll show you a few photos of a listing I stumbled across this week. Here's the rules of the game:

    1. Go try to figure out the maker of this pattern.
    2. If you find it, just write a message saying "that's something I would buy" or "I would pass on that sale", do your best to give some of our less experienced silver enthusiasts a chance to figure it out.
    3. If you aren't sure where to start on this game, post a message and I'll try to give a few clues to get you started!
    4. Good luck!

Three photos from a listing, the seller simply states that the pattern is "old colony":

I just played this game yesterday. I am not good enough to ID a pattern without the maker's marks on the back. I found a great set of Wm. Rogers Tupperware Rose, silverplate, for $10.

Yes, that is something I might buy, depending on the seller's price.

    What if it was $100?

Free shipping? :hilarious: Everything in the box and the box too?

Let's just say $100 total, shipping included without the box (at my request).

Only if I could get a good rate to scrap it.

I pick up silver-plated flatware if it's cheap enough. No box, but I find them a lot and buy them when I see them. 8 knives, 7 forks, 7 salad forks, a ton of spoons (didn't count them all) and tablespoons and serving spoons. The dinner forks are always gone here because crafters make bracelets out of them.

I could be wrong (i'll find out soon) but i don't think this set is silver-plated. And for $100, the scrap price I would get is irrelevant. My rough estimate right now is if this is sterling like I think it will, scrap will be over $1000.

I"d take a crack at it for the right price, and $100 is definitely the right price. The bottom drawer makes me wonder, but the pieces on the top probably could have featured in the Garden of Good and Evil if I'm right.

Could it be stainless in an old box?

If I'm wrong (which I hope I'm not) it could be stainless. I'm not aware of this particular pattern being made in anything other than sterling (for the record, I have gotten this wrong in the past on a pattern, the maker made the same pattern in silverplate but used a different name for the silverplate pattern). Here's my logic of purchasing this one without asking for additional photos:

    1. I've done my research, and feel fairly confident I know what the backs are going to say (sterling)
    2. I've felt the pain of asking a seller for a photo of the back, only for them to say back "oh, I'm so sorry I didn't realize these were sterling..." and then take down the listing.
    3. If I'm wrong, I'm out $100, but if I'm right, I'm up $1000ish. So it's a good risk reward.
    4. Finally...if I'm wrong, I learn in the process. Not all mistakes are cost free, but the ones that cost you teach you the most.

Those pistol grip pieces in the bottom drawer are worth investigating too. The big spoon I recognize - donate it to a thrift store and get it out of your hair. Silverplate, and the cheap stuff at that.

Not 'Savannah', if that's what you're thinking - introduced in the same decade though...

Wrong pattern then, but the right conclusion anyway. The MS was playing tag with my computer glasses, making life difficult.

Thank you to those who tried to solve the puzzle, and it appears that at least a few folks did. The set arrived in the mail today, and I'm thankful I took the time to dig and research this listing, because I was fortunate to get a set of Towle Spanish Provincial sterling silver flatware. A few photos fresh out of the box:

That's the maker and pattern I was expecting. I'm glad to see that you did not include the knives and serving pieces in the weight picture, since the blades of the knives and serving pieces are very likely stainless, not to mention that the knife handles are filled.

What did the rest of the stuff turn out to be?
