How big is it? What convinces you that it's 17th century, or worth 7K?

I had this oil on hand-hammered copper, 7 11/16” (19.5cm) by 9 3/16” (23.4cm) . It was identified at the Antiques Roadshow as 17th or 18th century, European, and valued at $600-700.

In lower right corner is that a repair or did someone try to hide the artist's signature, can almost see writing under that area. Artist gave her a very tiny mouth in relation to the eyes; hands are a bit on small side too. Some paint from frame has gotten on bottom edge of canvas in front. Anyway good luck with her.

Someone please educate me on whether the texture looks ok. You can clearly see the canvas pattern all over, but I don't see anything that looks like brush strokes usually seen on oil paintings. Does lack of visible brush strokes mean artist just used very thin paint, or what? Any chance it is one of those mechanically-produced images like oilene? Wood on back isn't very old. Dimensions are always appreciated. Her left shoulder is cut off-does that look normal or could it mean there once was more which has been cut off?

The presence of brush strokes goes in and out of fashion over time.

Don't do it...it's frankly unattractive, no matter what the age of it.

I'd not buy it. That kind of dull and not well done religious stuff is not commercial at all.

It looks quite modern in technique. If you're going to pay more than $50 for this, have it appraised by a reputable gallery or art dealer.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I'm thinking the eyes are way too large and the lips are way too modern....something just doesn't fit. $7K and 17th Century don't seem to add up to me....just my HO.....and not happy with how crooked the right eye is....I would not pay the $1200 either....Not without professional authentication! Addendum....from the posted picture, I agree the hands are too small and do not have enough good detail....

the hands have no detail....& may in fact be a bunch of noodles....or worms..!:eek:

Very wise, I'd say. There's better stuff out there.
