Today I stumbled upon this large stoneware jug in a local antique shop. With its spout and threaded stoneware plug, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. It was marked with a company name, which has been ground off. It’s also stamped Made in South Africa, with what I believe is probably the name of a city or province that I can’t decipher. Any ideas about what this jug was for, or when it might date to?

How very interesting. It's exactly like many London made salt glazed stoneware beer or spirit flagons, including Doulton and other Lambeth potteries. They're generally mid to late 19th C and for beer or gin.

Nice. There’s a a lot of these around and they often sell for not much money. However I really don’t often see ones with the 2 handles and it also still has the screw-in stopper/cap.

Company might be A.E. & C.l. LTD.. Made in Vereeniging South Africa

Also interestingly A.E. & C.l. LTD supposedly stands for: African Explosives and Chemical Industries (which was formed in 1944 after a name change from African Explosives and Industries)

But there’s a lot these things around in South Africa and many companies across industries were using them. So the possible company name is just a suggestion..

Screw in tops and two handles are a fairly common form here.
