I picked up this large pottery vase last Friday at the auction. It has a hand painted floral & landscape design with raised trim. It is 12 3/8" tall & not marked of course. :p

I know two things about your vase: Jack and Squat. However, I am getting a Nippon-type vibe from it. Or, it could be a cheap imitation Austrian vase trying to look like a Nippon vase.

Now that's a vase with a definite "front" and "back." I like it because you (almost literally) have two vases for the price of one. ;)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I like the design on it... don't know anything about it, though.

    So strange, it's interesting.

I think the flower is a tree peony, in case that helps.

It looks like it was damaged in a fire.

    I agree with vitry.
    Late 1800s Japanese (Nippon)

Also agree but think this could even be a bit later..... on into the first quarter of the 20th century.

I thought that at first - but there are no marks for origin. So before 1891, unless of course it was not made to be exported.

    Hi,
I agree with Vitry, all the stuff in my apartment fire looked like that. Got no fire or water damage but everything looked smoked like that. It was strange everything washed off except the wood furniture finishes, they had to be refinished. The upolstered sofa and chairs came clean but the white oriental rugs still looked like the asphalt outside. The only white were spots where the chair legs sat.

I had some small plates with that air-brushed looking background. They were Japanese and circa 1920.

    Thanks everyone!!!

When I first saw it my immediate gut reaction was Japanese, but I have no explanation as to why because when it comes to this baked dirt stuff I am rally a dunce. However I keep trying for some inexplicable reason. LOL

Any suggestions for KW's for the title? I need help especially for the raised design.

This vase was quite dirty when I bought it at the auction. All I have done was a quick rinse off & rinse out, but to me it still looks dingy especially the landscape scene on the one side. Is this what it is suppose to look like or is there anything else I can do to make it look better?

Would this be an example of Raku type pottery?
