    I found this beautiful
44” W x 32” L oil painting today. The guy whom I bought it from said his uncle was a famous makeup artist in Hollywood. He said it came from a movie set. But of course did not know which movie. It has not been well cared for. I am hoping to get some help on the Artist name. It is here in the pics on the frame.

It's a very well know painting (and Velásquez' only nude.) Not a clue as to movie. Duncan Vale, the framer, appears to have been active in L.A. in the 1930s and by the 1950s had a second store in S.F., if that helps.

Every little bit helps I really appreciate your knowledge about this. It looks like the frame is probably worth more than the copy. Thank you.

I only know of the Rokeby Venus featuring in the UK movie "Venus", with the wonderful Peter O'Toole, but that has nothing to do with LA.
As I looked for the movie, to check if my memory was correct (it was, in this case), I came across this documentary, also UK, but thought I would mention it:

This is the original by Velazquez, by the way:

Yours looks like a pretty good copy, better than most we see on the forum. But Velazquez was a master in painting silk and satin (and anything else). Very hard to copy that, you can see the difference with yours.

Strange, I saw the numbers 71-76 rather than the H H you saw. I saw the Miss as just a test the pencil squiggle.
I’m seeing the sig as — —banz.

It's a famous painting, so there are bound to be copies. It's possible that yours appeared in a movie, but for that to matter, you would need to know the movie, show where it was used, and then prove that the copy you have is the same one used in that movie.

Always interesting to compare a copy with an original to understand the difference between the master and the everyday painter.
