This huge 41cm tall vase was converted to a lamp when I bought it. It’s charmingly hand painted with a scene of playing children.
I think it’s French 19th century but would welcome your opinions.

There is a crack and some minor restoration but this could be easily rectified (the crack was painted over when I bought it with what I imagine the person who did it looked like a branch but I’ve removed it).

    All comments welcome

Are you sure it wasn't always a lamp base? The hole in the bottom looks original to me.

There’s a line of gilding inside the rim which doesn’t seem logical in that case.

The artwork is wonderful, John. I'd like to know what the artist had in mind with the discussion between the two in the back. "You wind the string around it and then pull really hard!"

The illustration is taken from an engraving by Augustin de St. Aubin (1736-1807) called Le Jeu de Sabot. It's the opening image from a series of six called "Les Differens Jeux des Petits Pollisons de Paris" (Different Games of the Little Rascals of Paris).

Fantastic. Thanks. It’s clearly based upon this series. Big help.
