I posted about this awhile ago and I finally got it. It is an unusually large dog clip clasp 14k gold. It measures about an inch and a half. Weighs 7 grams. My best guess is that it went to a very heavy pocket watch back in the day... If so I would love to had seen the chain that was attached to it! Any other thoughts?

Also I plan on turning this into a bracelet. My initial thoughts were to attach a leather cord on both ends... but I don't know how to go about doing that? Any ideas?

would it not serve better as a necklace...maybe holding a pendant...?

Pocket watch chain originally, but I'd throw some leather on it and wear that as a necklace. Alternately, resell to a 'watch guy' who buys spares to repair old chains. All you'd need to make a necklace is a suede cord and a couple of knots.
