Hi there! I picked this painting up at a garage sale in Florida a couple years back. I loved the color palette used and thought the frame was very beautiful. The artists name looks like Y or V Berkley. Not 100%. It is probably an unknown. It looks to me like oil. Can anyone confirm?

The back of the canvas is marked "Berkley 57 #16". The frame is marked "#16 and #2357". Do these numbers have any significance? I assume 57 is short for 1957 the year it was created. Anyone recognize the artists name?
    Work measures 23 1/2" x 11 1/2" and the frame measures 30" x 18". Any info would be wonderful.

Looks to be amateur to my eye. Does appear to be oil with a shiny varnish applied. Think you are correct about 57 being the date. #16 might be the artist's painting number (#16 for the year). The other number might be an inventory # for the stretcher.

Thank you. I typed out what was on the back side of the frame so no one had to rotate any pictures to decipher it.

too late.... Deb was there for us .

the siggy and writing on the rear bear no resemblance.......and I dislike staples....
but from the way it's painted and framed..... 57 may indeed be a time frame...

looks like what one would expect from a county crafts fair..

Agree mid-century and likely the work of an amateur. But someone with art training as very carefully composed and the shortcut the artist took with reflections is done with confidence. Does have charm in its well-chosen frame. By way, it's not just the words and numbers on the back that provide information; it's also the method in which they are written. Standards of penmanship change over the years and can help date a work. So can fountain pen vs. ball point pen. And a crossed 7 would likely indicate European origin.
