Lamp from historic Hotel San Carlos

This lamp has been in my family around 20 years. It was in my childhood house and I just sort of “inherited” it when we all parted ways. Long story short, my fiancée hated it. So I listed it on one of those free “sell my junk” apps, and sold it for $80 bucks earlier today. Im worried I may have screwed up. I spoke with my eldest sister who informed me my dad had purchased it at a local auction in Phoenix, and it was from the lobby of the historic hotel San Carlos. There is nothing I have to prove it, and there wasn’t a single marking on it that I could find. If anybody has any idea of who the artist was or whether or not I just gave it away, I’d appreciate putting my mind at ease! Thanks!

We can't re live things we've done. Best to know that it probably went to someone who will appreciate it and that you no longer need to store it. I just think it is a fantastic piece that I would love to own.

This is true! I loved it but had nowhere to put it. I am happy to know it will likely wind up prominently displayed somewhere!

    Can't comment on value.

Heck, most of us here live for moments where we purchase things for a good price, typically it makes our day. Happens all the time.

Just think about someone else loving it, perhaps they have the exact spot to display.

If you really scoured it for marks, no foundry or artist's marks, might be hard to ID, anyway.

If it doesn't pain you too much, you might consider sending a final email to the buyer with the provenance your sister mentioned. As you said, no proof, but if the provenance you mentioned is correct, it will be definitely lost forever unless you let them know.

It was a sculpture made to look like bronze for all I know.. fairly certain it would shatter if I knocked it over, but the world may never know.

Lucille makes a good suggestion. You could also hit the shops and try to find yourself a bargain to replace it.

Well when it clashes with everything in our 1500 sq ft house and I have no idea what the hell it is or what to sell it for, I guess ill informed decisions were made. I even tried to GIVE it back to my parents and all 3 of my siblings. Looking back I should have totally dumped her over it /s

Agree, this piece would not fit stylistically in many modern homes.

A sibling of mine sold something once, now ancient history. We were emptying out my parent's home in Chicago area 3 years ago, taking what family items we wanted and preparing for a possible estate sale (to be run by professionals) after we left the state. To be helpful, before I got there, my brother sold my father's old musical equipment from the late 60's, 70's. My brother was so proud to tell me that he got "$100" for the amp, and that the buyer was "really happy".

I can only imagine that this was a pretty good deal for someone. Dad always bought top of the line. Anyway, what was done was done, I just said, "terrific!"

If your sister didn't want to lamp when you offered it, too little too late. I think you did what you needed to do! :)

The history buff in me would still encourage you to send a short text or email the buyer -- just with the hotel info. The provenance probably doesn't increase value much if at all, but so nice to keep the possible history alive.
