I've taken an informal survey on the percentage of adult Americans who are aware of our big cannon auction on Oct 7. By my estimate only 3.1% of males and 0.0000024% of females are aware of it. I'd sure like to double that by auction day. You can help. If you haven't yet, please broadcast something like the following on FB, twitter, whatever. Why should you? Well if the auction brings in way too much money, after family members get a cut, and I have enuf set aside to pay the cap. gains tax, I'll give away some to you guys of course! Thanks.

    Dear Friend,
Here's the link to James D. Julia’s illustrated online catalog which includes the largest collection of antique cannons ever offered for sale.
    http://jamesdjulia.com/auction/369-october-2014-firearms-auction/?session=1
The cannons start with lot 1384, about 4/5 of the way down the page, and include over 25 tons of full-sized original, working antique cannons, as well as many fine patent and inventors' cannon models. You can bid by internet, phone, or leave a written bid if you can't attend the October 7, 2014 live auction in Fairfield, Maine.
Please forward this to everyone you think may be interested, and put it on social media, etc.
    Thanks!

Thanks SOS and MCT! Every byte that's out there on the web increases the chance that some latter-day William Randolph Hearst will hear about the auction and tell one of his people to go buy them all, and that'd be just peachy! WRH had a great collection of large old bronze cannons before his fortunes went South, and a couple of nice old Spanish mortars still overlook the swimming pool at San S.

Put it out a few places. I don't think anyone will bite directly, but I have friends with friends in odd places.

Thanks Ev and Bev. All that'll help as one person tells two others and so on. I know Adrian has posted it here and there. I've "used up" all my facebook friends and put the ad on their pages without asking, and fortunately none have "unfriended" me (yet?) I've also put it on the FB pages of many and varied business entities, but I'm not sure how many of them will actually stick as it seems they have an approval process so my posts don't show up right away. Wish I understood how that whole FB thing really works.

Thanks DF! Yours might be the post that finds the wealthy recluse who has always dreamed of having his turreted mansion surrounded by menacing-looking artillery!

I will say one thing about the online catalog-with its links to huge amounts of additional info, I am pretty sure it is the most informative (read also fattest in terms of gigabytes) auction catalog that's ever existed-I'd be surprised if anyone could find one with more content. Some of the cannons have hundreds of pages of text and dozens of photos, plus links to videos, books, etc. all linked from the "view additional images" pages for each item.

Well the effort won't be wasted, I'm sure some of 'em have friends, FB or otherwise, who would consider spending a few bucks on some novel yard décor.

You'll like this: I was doing pretty well posting info about the auction on gun, weapon, etc. FB pages, then for some reason I can't recall I joined a populous "paranormal" page and posted there, and was promptly expelled. Guess I shoulda pointed out that any of the cannons can fire silver bullets in case of vampire attacks, or something topical.

Here's a different format for the auction info the House sent out today-we felt lucky to have hogged two of the four photos for "session 1" when our cannons are much less than 50% of the lot numbers. The cannon photos do get your attention, though, whereas the umpteen-thousandth rifle or revolver might not.

I've now posted auction info on about 1200 of my FB friends' timelines, and I'd guess roughly 5% have shared it with all their friends. This is really the payoff since what's the average facebook members' number of friends-maybe 200, or 500? There's the leverage. I guess I can look up average friends number.

Here's the press release which came out today-the cannons are mentioned first, which I think is good strategy as it sets this auction apart from "ordinary" antique gun auctions.

One thing that surprised me a little was when I heard from a friend who spends a lot of time at the house, helping them-he told me that even though the official auction preview days don't start until Friday, he said as far as the cannon customers, "everybody who is anybody (in that market sector) has already been here." Perhaps they came before the official preview so as to avoid being seen inspecting various pieces and letting others know what they were going to bid on? Perhaps to leave a written bid after inspecting? Anybody know why they do that?

Avg. no. of facebook friends per user is said to be 338, currently. so a rough estimate of the no. of folks I alerted to the auction via FB is my posts + shared posts = 1200 + ( 0.05 x 1200 x 338) = 21480. Of those maybe 1/2 of 1% would be interested enough to look in the online catalog, so 21480 x 0.005 = 107. If 10% of those were motivated to put in bids, we have 10 more bidders now. Worth the effort? No way to tell yet.

Added to that are the FB posts you folks made, which I greatly appreciate.

Am at auction house during the preview days. Have given a few private tours of the cannon collection. House tells me that for most of our items, there are several phone bidders signed up, with two days before auction, and they take that as a good sign.

House has been very accommodating in some special requests I made for increased photo coverage, more signage on the cannons set up for preview. This house has 3 divisions in addition to firearms, fine arts, toys and dolls, and lamps and glass.

Have been very busy showing prospective bidders the cannons here at Julia’s, answering questions etc; did not even get time for lunch today, so hope that’s a good sign, may be similarly occupied tomorrow AM till the cannons start selling noonish. Wish me luck-I have absolutely no idea how the bidding will go but there’s been a huge amt of interest. Had some great seafood meals in the several days we’ve been here in Maine.
