Picked this up recently, because I thought it looked cool. NOT comfortable and needs reupholstering IMO.

Tarnished sign at the back says Kruehler, (ETA: Woops just realized its KROEHLER) which I see were a pretty good name for rocking chairs. No idea what kind of wood it is, any ideas?

I see they were active mid century but the claw arms seem to date it earlier than that. 40s?

Any idea at value of it? If there IS any value. The wood is in fairly good condition, there is a crack in one of the back legs but it rocks well.

Wood is most likely American Oak.
1940s is about right for the time period.

    Is it veneered?

That seems odd for American oak

Think it earlier, transitional from the Mission style. This would put it in the 20s-30s, I should think. It is possible that the arm is veneer. Would allow them to use less good wood overall and put a nice veneer on the arm where it is most seen. Little value to any chair needing upholstery. Cost to reupholster would exceed value. Even if the upholstery was in good shape, I wouldn't see this exceeding $150.00 here in the Midwest and, most likely, under $100.00. Could pick up something like this needing upholstery at auction under $20.00.

You know I'm not sure what is going on there, it's definitely made of some kind of solid wood, with a veneer on top of it? It's weird because it does not look like the veneer ever covered the claw part. The claws are carved wood.

My husband says it does not appear to be veneer, whatever is flaking off at the top is the exact same wood that is underneath. But they could have put veneer to match the rest of the wood

Thanks everyone! My husband says he wants to try his hand at reupholstering it. He's been wanting to try his hand at reupholstering so its fine by me. If he ends up destroying it, we didn't spend very much on it anyways!

Are both arms showing this edge that looks like veneer? If not, it could be a natural split in the wood where the end grain meets the front of the arm. Sometimes see this with oak.
