I tried researching kofokuji wood carving but came up with nothing. Not sure on symbol either but it doesn't appear real old looking at the wood.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I may be losing my mind... this is the third time I have tried to post this. If I'm repeating, please forgive.

    Meanwhile...
Why do we think it's from this particular temple?
Here's a look at the place.

Also, what/who is he? An old man with a walking stick, carrying a big pack?

Looks like some of the wood carvings at the Nara craft museum gift shop.

Kofukuji (Kōfukuji) Temple 興福寺 in Nara. The workshop headquarters of the Keiha School of Buddhist Sculptors, who dominated the world of Japanese Buddhist statuary in the 13th and 14th century. Since their main workshop at Kofukuji was in Nara, they are known as the Nara Busshi. The workshop was first established by Raijo in the early 11th century. See Nara Busshi for more details. Kofukuji Temple was also the clan temple of the powerful Fujiwara 藤原 family.(Pulled from onmarkproductions.com)
The three marks on the carving are the same characters as the ones in the middle of the Japanese writing seen here on top. I agree, very old and the way the wood grain was figured into the lines of the carving, ie; robe, beard hair. More than likely a "master carver".
