This came in recently from a local source that has supplied other period Italy medals so I am inclined to think it is authentic. There are still some outstanding details that I want to understand, and wonder if anyone can help.

First, there is a mark GD on one of the outer surfaces of the inner circle. There is a good close up in the last picture. There are some number of variants, even in the "knight" category, and I am not sure which one this is. I think the colored dot pattern in the crown is what makes the determination. Does anyone know what this one is? Any thoughts on the unusual toning on the back surface behind the eagle? I know many of these were made from 18K gold, but not sure of the composition of this one. It is not attracted to a magnet.

    Weight with ribbon: 10.9 grams

Dimensions: 37.7mm across x 37.7mm high. 96.7mm height from top of ribbon to bottom of medal.

    Thanks in advance! ... Dave

    Looks ok to me.
I had a set of miniatures about 7 -10 years ago, they fetched quite a decent amount on ebay.
As you can see yours is identical to one of mine.
unfortunately I`ve lost the paper work detailing what they represented.
It was written in German but I believe it had some Papal connections.

Nice grouping Davey! Thanks for the encouragement. I asked about the GD mark because I haven't seen anyone yet mention it on the similar comparables I've found, and it is not a hard mark to spot. I don't think it means gold -- more likely a maker mark.

Thanks Susan. The other pieces that came from the same person were WW1 period. I'm not positive that this one is, but it is possible. This one is in pretty good condition, but it doesn't look new or like a repro to me. I'm not sure if there is any positive way to date it unfortunately, but maybe someone will know.
