Several years ago I bought a leather cover book titled Whittiers Poem's for a few dollars at an antique shop. It's been sitting on my shelf for a long time and I just recently started to wonder if it has any value to it. The cover itself is in rough shape, it's stained and torn in some places. The pages of the book itself are in good condition, no folds or tears, though they are slightly discoloured. The thing that's particularly interesting however is in the back there's a handwritten poem and signature from Whittier, which is primarily why I think the book might actually be worth something. Any chance someone knows if this would hold any value?

If it is indeed an autograph letter, then there is value. BUT... it is much more likely to be a facsimile, in which case it doesn't help.

How would I go about finding out if it's legitimate or not?

Check the net for facsimiles, scour book sale sites for info and contact autograph sale/auction houses. :)

Yes, see if you can find other copies of the same edition online.
