Just bought this necklace made of tortoiseshell and treated red amber. Tortoiseshell jewelry is very popular in Japan and only banned after 1990s so I assume this one is made prior to that date? But I can’t tell anything else from the style, and its condition is almost like new. ed8fda3a9a10b1996209389c648e0be7.jpeg 2e3b5b6d99300ed3339dfb21c6b23481.jpeg cf36f7ac15c457b76f531d773031f102.jpeg dccfbc07a1a8988350dad681d8ac756a.jpeg Can anyone give a more specific date please?

I was going to say....The Japanese still make tortoiseshell items. It is legal domestically, but they absolutely attempt to export it. You can find the illegal new stuff on eBay occasionally, even though eBay bans the sale completely.

Any country that participates in CITES is only going to view antique items as legal to sell (with paperwork, export/import rules etc. etc.), generally speaking. You'd have to look at your country's participation and specific laws.

Oh I see... they even have the same clasp so you might be right. 99% of these jewelry are sold as vintage so I thought mine was too. But mine was less than 1/3 of that retail price, and the seller surely acquired it with much lower number

I thought they only has a very late ban, didn't know they still make them. I don't think they could guarantee everything is made from that old stock. And morally I would only consider buying tortoiseshell product that are much older than myself (20s), all my previous stuff in my collection is 150 yrs old in average, so this is...
