Well, I'm guessing it's Japanese. The person I bought it from said early 20th C.

    Does anyone know the mark?

    11.5" tall

    Thank you.

Suspect it's probably Chinese given the stylisation of the characters. I find this type of item very difficult to date without handling, could be anything from early 20th to a few years ago.

edit - the mark is upside down fyi

It strikes me as older, having it here in my hands, but I am no expert.

It's also heavier than I expected when I first picked it up, for whatever that's worth.

    Thanks for the comments.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

You may have already tried this, but many people here have recommended the Gotheborg site for looking up marks. https://gotheborg.com/

    Yes-- thank you.

Actually someone direct messaged me and identified it as Japanese.

    Here's my mark:

And here's the mark associated with Japanese ceramicist Inoue Ryosai II (1854-1905):

There was, however, an Inoue Ryosai I, and also an Inoue Ryosai III, so I'm not sure who exactly made it. But I'm really close!

Thanks again for the follow up @Figtree3!

Well found, with the rotated and clearer mark I can now see it does indeed say Dai Nippon down the right. Interesting as the stylisation of the Kanji and the vase form itself are very much more in line with Chinese work. The potter was clearly influenced by Chinese design.

Does it need a clean? I wonder about those spots. At first I was thinking it was some sort of sang de boeuf glaze. Does have a Chinese look to it! Cool vase.
