I picked up this bracelet today, so happy with it regardless of provenance etc, but am curious of course to know whether it’s genuine and all. It’s in great condition on front, the back needs cleaning. I searched here and saw that question asked before (how to clean Damascene jewelry) but didn’t see an answer. Should I just gently use a polishing cloth?

See if a magnet is attracted to the black side. Backside can be cleaned a bit with a sunshine, front side with a mild soap and soft rag and it must be dried to remove moisture,do not rub the black side as it could loosen the gold/silver overlay.

Seems like front and back are both magnetic. They are fairly thin disks overall.

It looks like real Japanese damascene to me.

And to me, especially with the designs and plaque shapes.

Thritto, real Japanese damascene, and lovely.
The blackened plates are oxidised steel, so it is bound to be magnetic. The gold and silver motifs are hammered into the steel plates.
