Picked this up at an estate sale. Stands 2 1/4" tall and measures 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" and is 1 1/2" deep inside. Has Japanese symbols on the bottom and Made in Japan. What was it used for?

I'm betting it was made to hold a gift item or some sort. Carved jade or soapstone, an enameled vase, etc. Beyond that...dunno.
