Hi everybody! Hope I have this under right thread. First does this look like jade? Second is it a brush washer? It is 5 inch tall to top of tree and 3 inch across bowl part. TIA for everything that you do here!

Elegant ashtray with ciggy slot. Remember at one time smoking was glamorous. No idea as to material but this would have been a big hunk of gem stone to carve.

It looks like jade to me because it is translucent and has variations in color and spots. It comes in two sections and is joined at the bowl. I agree it looks like a brush washer with a place to set the brush. Whether it is a reproduction or not, I don't have a clue. It doesn't seem to have any wear on the bottom. You need also to assess whether it is glass or jade too. Jade will feel cold even after you hold it for a while as it doesn't retain heat.

Not a brush washer. George is right: clearly an ashtray. And yes, jade or jadeite I would say.

Thanks everybody! Yes KikoBlueEyes after you said 2 sections I looked thru loupe and yes the tree is added but the little flower on the right side is not. Here are more pictures , I don't know how that is added on but it matches the bowl perfect. IMG_3772.JPG IMG_3773.PNG IMG_3776.PNG

I think it is original to the piece. I have a set of jade foo dogs where the foo dogs are one piece and the mount is another. I imagine they are glued together. It just answers George's point of having to be a large stone to make a 5 inch tall piece.

I am a bit skeptical about being jade. Is it carved out of one piece?
    Scratch resistant to steel blade?

I'm pretty sure it's jade. I tryed to scratch bottom with scissors no scratch. It's 2 joined pieces as I show in pictures. And it scratches glass and metal. I really don't know what else to try. I don't know if it's a ashtray or brush washer, I think it's to nice for ashtray. Or how old it may be?

The only way to be sure is testing with a gem tester :)

Thanks Marie that's a good idea lol. Do you think one of the cheaper gem testers would work on this? I have never used one before. Thanks everybody!

You were asking about age and I can't help you there, but have you see any marks that show use, such as scratches on the bottom or broken off bits? I think you have a very beautiful item no matter what the age. @Hollyblue might have some comments about the carving.

It looks like a brush rest. I think ashtrays have like 3 or 4 rest. Maybe lol ashtray or brush washer no matter what I like it.

I've never seen a brush-washer with a "rest." This is an ashtray.

I'm sorry, my point was that it "could be made into" a brush washer that would be very pleasant to use. I'm not a collector of specific things, ie ashtrays, but I do collect interesting objects to use however they appear to suit my needs even if they weren't made for that purpose. But that's not what the forum focuses on - it wants the specific use. My boo!! I'll word it better next time so no confusion. Or at least less? :shame:
