Ivory Three Wise Monkeys

    Hello

    Just here to share a recent find. Lovely Japanese ivory carving of the Three Wise Monkeys.

    Carved from a single piece, quite a chunk too. 13.5cm width, weighs 144 grams.

    Looks like ivory to me. The schreger lines are more difficult to see because the carving is oriented along the length of the tusk, and the carved fur obscures them. But I believe I see the faint "watered" effect of tangential schreger lines on the legs and feet.

    I knew I would have trouble with this one, but it's definitely ivory.

    Another yes for ivory, and I agree, it is Japanese. When ivory is really white like this, lines are very difficult to discern. The density is another clue.
