Featured Italian? Tapestry with metal thread? Help please

Hiya all, picked this up today. I tried researching it and not much luck. Apprx 38" x 60" , rough but cool. Silk with metal thread. Any help much appreciated

Not a tapestry. An embroidered banner. Says what it is which appears to be for the St. Rocco Society of Corona, Queens. The di M.S. likely stands for "of Holy Mary." These people may be able to tell you more:

It is nice. Beautiful handwork. Luxe materials. Society was founded in 1889 so no older.

Here's something similar from another Italian-American group. Dates to 1921. Not nearly as lovely as yours. I referred to yours above as a banner but would more rightly be called a procession standard.

Yes, it is a procession standard, typical for Catholic regions or regions where Catholics are allowed to have processions.

We have them here as well. Ours are usually associated with our local guilds, originally set up to protect villages and towns. Patronage of a saint helps.

 

Yes. We used to go to the Feast of St. Anthony when we lived in Boston. It's a huge festival in the North End every year
