PICT0003.JPG Picked up this Islamic wall plate the other day because it got me curious.
I have never seen one with what looks like a shield in the middle. It looks
like it was a serving plate at some stage and a ring has been soldered
on the back to hang it on a wall. It also looks cast in a mold so I don't
expect it would be old although I could be wrong. Around the outside is
I believe a prayer of some sort with "Allah" symbols appearing several
times although I have been unable to find a calligraphic
equivalent anywhere on google which makes me even more curious.
Can anyone translate the script in the shield area?
Can anyone tell me anything else about it?

The picture is shown the way up it hangs.

    Cheers
    Stephen

Size? Earliest trays/plates i know of to come out of the Middle East with black enamel would be ca. 1980. Before about then the items had a bare brass surface, or tin and copper plating to highlight parts of the design on more recent pieces. Egypt was a major source of such items as they had a lot of tourist traffic, customers who came to them. Calligraphy on them is about anything the makers can find to copy, such as verses from the Koran.

Size is about 30cm (12"). Added better pictures. There's no highlighting just brass.

Ok, yes I guess the lighting made it look enameled. I was looking at a lot of these pieces up into 1990's and never saw one with the "heraldic shield" motif like yours. Maybe a recent trend? All I can think is that the tray-makers wanted something with more appeal to Christian tourists and came up with the "knight shield" design. Looking to history you can see why such shields might not be too popular in the Muslim world, I think they look on the Crusades much as Jews look on the Holocaust.
