Is this Vienna miniature cup and saucer a fake?

    Hi All

I'm not too familiar with Austrian backstamps. Does anyone think this is a fake 'beehive' and does anyone recognise the other mark? Presumably an artist's mark?

Don't know the first thing about its origins, but both pictures relate to Sappho, being crowned with laurel by Apollo & being inspired by Eros.

This is probably a Japanese cup and saucer from the 50s/60s.
    So yes a fake mark

The original mark would probably have been under the glaze and wouldn't wear off.

More than one company used a shield, so I wouldn't call it fake unless it said Royal Vienna.

There was probably a Japan sticker at one time. Really not the quality of Austrian pieces and as cluttered mentioned the beehive mark should be under the glaze. I think what you're seeing as an artist mark is actually another beehive mark that partially flaked (unless I'm missing something).

Thank you all so much! It's obvious now you've said that the beehive mark has rubbed on the second item, don't know why I didn't see it myself.

here a text that explains it, sadly in German. you can click on the pics to see further details. Neuwirth is the grand old lady of Vienna porcelain and ceramics.

seems that after the closure of the original Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur in 1864 there were many also wellknown companies that copied the Bindenschild because the laws were unclear.
difference to English use this here is a Bindenschild (shield with a belt) ; the beehive was an alteration of the Bindenschild to protect oneself of being pursued for fakery.
