Featured Is This Tony Evans? How to Describe?

I told myself not to go into the Salvation Army yesterday when I was in town as now that my dad has passed away, I need to concentrate on trimming my stuff down, not expanding. I couldn't resist though; it seems like forever since I've been there.

Anyway, this caught my eye on the way out. The signature looks the same as other Tony Evans' items online, and while I did find some of his items that were the same shape, alot of his stuff is completely different than this. It's roughly 6" high and 10" across.

I can't capture it in pictures, but it has this really beautiful sheen to it - slightly coppery, slightly "oil slick on a rainy day when the sun peeks out".

So what say ye all? If any one can throw out some other terms besides "brutalist", I'd appreciate it. Is this considered Raku?

PS. Just realized that the pics are a few shades lighter/brighter than the actual vase which slightly detracts from it...I need to correct that before listing.

Yeah, most of what I saw was wayyyyy different, but then there were some pieces quite similar except for the "meteoric" effect, as komokwa put it.

Signature sure looks the same from what I've found though.

Unusual for an American to cross a 7. And more unusual that he would do so inconsistently.

Excellent point about the "7". However.... I never used to cross my 7's, but after living in Europe for two years, I came back and now always cross them. So stranger things have happened, lol.

It isn't the look I associate with Tony Evans, but on a quick search found several in the exact shape with odd glazes called "brutalist raku". Also noticed a bit of variety with his signature. Sometimes a quite flamboyant "E" other times, more subdued. Always signed in sort of a pen like this and followed by a number.

I wouldn't rule out Tony Evans.

Here is one on Ebay, whether this one is a true Tony Evans, can't say.

You can see where there was a 2nd sticker that is no longer there. Perhaps would have had the same wording that the sticker on Tie Dye's has.

Good point about the "7" @Debora . Thank you for the input Debora, LucilleB & SIS (as well as the article).

I compared the signature with a lot of pieces on Ebay and Google. They all look very similar to the signature on my piece although I noticed that sometimes the "s" at the end was in cursive like mine and sometimes it wasn't.

I have found several more pots / vases like mine in shape, color and texture.

What stands out to me most is the stark difference between the vases like mine and some of his studio's other work. Here's an example.....

Looking through google again this morning, I'm more convinced that it is a Tony Evans piece as I see so many examples similar to mine in form, some even with that volcanic effect. The crossed "7" is a bit troubling, so I'll do a little more digging before I put it on ebay.

If you could find another with that "not watertight, liner suggested" label, might be a confirmation, too.

However, be warned, there are a lot of Tony Evans pieces out there, and not sure how well things are selling. On a quick search under completed, out of 99 pieces, just 17 sold. With a few exceptions, seems like his animal pottery is what is mostly in demand.

A year or so ago I had a piece similar to the one shown above, the pinks and blues and quite abstract, but mine was larger with a bit more movement to it. I snagged it at my local GW for $8.99, having already ID'd it on my phone and finding a similar piece that sold for $149 on Ebay and was pretty sure I was going to make some money on it.

I could not sell that vase for the life of me. Started with an auction, opening bid of $99, nothing. Then BIN for $99... eventually BIN for $49 with best offer and no takers. Was probably on Ebay for a year. I finally donated it back to the GW.

Hope that if yours is Tony Evans, that this style is one that is in particular demand. Maybe with the extreme look of the glaze will be a bonus.

Hope you have better luck. :)

Thanks LucilleB - I had noticed that overall his stuff isn't selling too well now.

That's a bummer as I'm trying to raise cash right now until I can find a full time job, and at the same time trying to liquidate things for when we have to move out of my parents' house. I thought I was gonna make an easy $200 if it was Tony Evans, but that doesn't seem likely now. Oh well, you win some and you lose some.

By all means list it and see what happens. You never know what is in demand.

Hope if this isn't the piece that sells, you find some other treasure to make some money.

Best of luck with your situation. :)
